Union has picked up a commitment from Benilde-St. Margaret’s (MN) junior defenseman Ben Newhouse for the 2016-2017 season.

The 5-foot-8, 165-pound Newhouse was the top scoring defenseman on the Red Knights this season with 33 points (five goals, 28 assists) in 24 games. His 10 power play points were third most on the team, and his plus-10 rating was tied for fourth best.

Newhouse, 17, ranked as overtheboards.net's No. 54 uncommitted prospect.

"There may be no better powerplay quarterback in the Minnesota high school ranks," wrote Jasper Kozak-Miller of overtheboards.net. "A skilled, active defenseman, it comes to mind regularly for us that Newhouse may be better suited up front, moving back to run the point on the man advantage.

"As he rounds out his defensive game and continues to be effective off the puck, his ability to thread passes while seeing and skating the full sheet will serve him well."

Newhouse, a native of Edina, Minnesota, served as an alternate captain for the Red Knights this season.

He is on the affiliate list of the U.S Hockey League's Waterloo Black Hawks, the team that drafted him in the fifth round (72nd overall) of the 2013 USHL draft.
