Union goalies pick up league honors

by Ryan Fay

A pair of Union goaltenders earned ECAC Hockey weekly honors, the league announced Tuesday.

Sakellaropoulos (l), Stevens (r)
Junior Colin Stevens was selected ECACH Goaltender of the Week, while freshman Alex Sakellaropoulos was named ECACH Rookie of the Week.

Stevens, a native of Niskayuna, recorded a career-high 49 saves in Friday's 2-0 shutout at 14th-ranked Yale. The 49 saves were the most for a Union goaltender in a regular season game since Corey Milan collected 50 in a 5-2 loss at Massachusetts on Nov. 25, 2007.

Making his first start since Dec. 13, Sakellaropoulos registered his first collegiate shutout after making 26 saves in Saturday's 3-0 win at Brown. He was the only NCAA Division I rookie goaltender to stop all shots he faced last weekend.

The blankings marked Union's first back-to-back shutouts since Trevor Koenig accomplished the feat at Colgate and Cornell on Feb. 26-27, 1998.

The honor marks the fourth time this season that Stevens was named ECACH Goaltender of the Week, and the second time that Sakellaropoulos was selected ECACH Rookie of the Week.
