The U.S. secured the gold after edging Denmark, 3-2, in overtime on a Thomas Novak power-play goal just under five minutes into the extra frame. The win gave the U.S its sixth tournament title in seven years.

“We had an incredible team effort against Denmark, which was capped with Tommy Novak’s overtime winner,” said Varady, who played at Union from 1997-2000 and later served as a student-assistant coach. “It was an unbelievable feeling, and this is another great accomplishment for USA Hockey.”

The U.S. finished the tournament with a 4-0 record, including a 2-0 mark in pool play. The U.S. advanced to the final after routing Canada East, 7-1, on Thursday.

In addition to his role with USA Hockey, Varady serves as the head coach for the U.S Hockey League's Sioux City Musketeers, where he coaches 2016-2017 Union forward recruit Ryan Walker.
