Union at Quinnipiac - game one lines

by Ryan Fay

Tenth-seeded Union will open a best-of-three ECAC Hockey tournament quarterfinal series at top-seeded Quinnipiac tonight at 7.

Union advanced following a two-game sweep of seventh-seeded Cornell in the opening round last weekend. The Dutchmen picked up a 4-2 win last Friday before ending the Big Red's season with a 7-0 rout the following night. Quinnipiac had a first-round bye after clinching the league's regular season title.

The Dutchmen haven't had much success against the Bobcats in recent years. Union has dropped six of its last seven contests against Quinnipiac, including both regular season meetings this year by identical 4-3 scores. The last time Union won a game at Quinnipiac was a 3-2 triumph on Feb. 5, 2011.

Union (18-16-2) enters the weekend on a four-game winning streak, it's longest since starting the season 5-0. The Bobcats (21-9-4) struggled at the end of the regular season, winning just one of their final four games (1-1-2).

Dutchmen head coach Rick Bennett enters the series with a 14-0 career mark in ECACH tournament action. He's 21-2 overall in postseason play, though one of two losses was a 5-0 setback against Quinnipiac in the 2013 NCAA tournament East Regional final.

Game two is scheduled for Saturday at 7. If necessary, game three would be played Sunday at 4. The series winner will advance to the league semifinals next Friday in Lake Placid.
