College Hockey Video of the Week: Big Red, Frozen Four

When two teams wearing Red Wings home and away sweaters Cornell and Boston University faced off earlier on Saturday night, few expected the final score to be 8-7. Even fewer expected a thrilling 3OT affair. But who expected Lauriane Rougeau to pull a Mario Lemieux?

Then this happened:

Congratulations to Cornell, who is heading to the Frozen Four. On March 16th, Cornell will play Minnesota and Wisconsin will play Boston College.

The Dutchwomen were 0-2 this year against Cornell and 0-1 against Boston University.

College Hockey Video of the Week (2/20/11): College Hockey Own Goals

There might be nothing worse than scoring a goal on yourself (as a defenseman for the majority of my hockey career I know the feeling). Here are two videos of college hockey players scoring on their own net.

College Hockey Video of the Week (2/7/11): It's Beanpot Time!

Today begins Beanpot 2011! The first game is between Northeastern and Harvard at 5pm, and the second game between Boston University and Boston College begins at 8pm. The winners of each game will face each other next Monday at 7:30pm, while the losers will play in the consolation game at 4:30pm.

For more info on the tournament check out Beanpot Hockey.com and Wikipedia.

The second game is the "bigger" game of the two. The Terriers won the Beanpot and the NCAA Championship in 2009, while the Eagles did the same thing last season. This game is the fourth meeting between the two teams this season. BC has won the three previous games this season by the scores of 9-5, 5-2, and 3-2.

So, in honor of the BC-BU game here are some videos that pertain to the rivalry:

College Hockey Video of the Week: College Hockey Outdoors

With the 2011 NHL Winter Classic coming up this Saturday, I thought it would be appropriate to show highlights of two of the latest college hockey games to be played outdoors.

The first video is of the "The Big Chill at the Big House" where Michigan and Michigan State played in front of a record 113,411 people (at least that was the number that was announced) a few weeks ago. The second is highlights from "Frozen Fenway" where Boston University and Boston College went head-to-head at Fenway Park last season.

I'm still waiting for a Union-RPI game to be played outdoors...

College Hockey Video of the Week (11/15/10): BU wins 2009 National Championship

While RPI fans might find Friday's loss heartbreaking, and Union fans might feel the same way about Saturday's loss it could always be worse. Here's the ultimate example. In the 2009 National Championship game the Miami (Ohio) was up 3-1 with under one minute left in regulation, but ended up losing the game. It was probably the greatest game I've ever been a part of.

By the way, Matt Gilroy's play on the game-tying goal might be my favorite hockey play that I've seen live. I couldn't stop talking about it after the game. What a heads up play.

The first video is of the final minutes of regulation, and the second is of overtime:
