Articles
- College Hockey News has written some great pieces on Union lately, one that has "Union climbing another mountain," and one that provides an historical sweep of the program. Adam Woodson a very good writer, so be sure to give his article a read. He also takes a rather decisive tack when it comes to discussing Roger Hull. It's also one of the best historical capsules of Union hockey I've read. One quote that I not only want to post to the Masthead of this site, but to perhaps put up in Messa Rink:
Like Andy Dufresne chipping away at a stone wall in Shawshank for decades, Union got where it is today amid numerous obstacles and tireless work of a series of individuals.
- Brian Sullivan of USCHO also writes a great article about Union, and their travails as a non-scholarship school.
- CHN also has a "capsule" of the team, with a few players to watch, along with some tidbits.
- USCHO also has an overview of the Dutchmen, with some very nice quotes.
- Pete Iorizzo of the Times Union gushes over Hobey Baker finalist Troy Grosenick.
- Inside College Hockey has a preview of Union's upcoming game against Ferris State. From their article:
Max Novak will stop at nothing to get his Rookie of the Month Award |
While many people don't know much about this team, they know what they do best and don't stray from a winning game plan.
- Tim Wilkin of the Times Union talked with Jeremy Welsh, presumably about some sort of team sport played on ice.
- The Maine Hockey Journal has a nice piece on Union assistant coach Joe Dumais.
- The Times Union talks to Josh Jooris about his father, who played for--and won a national title with--RPI in 1985. Now his son also gets to advance to the Frozen Four. Pretty cool.
- NHL.com also profiles the Frozen Four, complete with a poll!
- Also categorize under "surreal" and "incredible:" Union gets an ESPN writeup. Let's hope this continues. Edit: Union gets an even more substantial ESPN piece.
- If you haven't been following Ken Schott, do so. He covers the Dutchmen like no other.
Events
- Incredibly awesome to see William Fitzsimons, who graduated in 2008, holding a Union Hockey shirt in Afghanistan.
- The boys will be leaving for the airport tomorrow at 10:15 from the Messa Rink parking lot. Come see them and send them off with a pep rally. (And maybe skip class?)
- Schenectady has been embracing their Frozen Four bound Dutchmen.
- Union fans can watch the game on Thursday in Messa Rink. The atmosphere should be great.
- Oh, and not to be lost in the Frozen Four mania, Troy Grosenick won the ECAC goalie of the month award, Jeremy Welsh the player of the month award, and Max Novak the rookie of the month award. I suppose it's a good sign that this, which is toast-worthy in itself, gets pushed down to the bottom of the page. Congratulations are in order to all three.
- And, as always, the masterful Phil Cohn produces another pump-up video:
I read where "old man" Tedisco showed up for a photo op for himself when the team was leaving for Florida. What a jerk! He should save his praise for the team (and self promotion) until after the tournment, win or lose. This weekend is about Union, not Tedisco.
