Remember these guys? 10 who left early

by Ryan Fay

Freshman forward Kevin Shier, who left the Union men's hockey team on Sunday, wasn't the first player to ever leave early for a reason other than turning pro.

Here's a look at 10 other players who have left the program early in recent years, in some cases without playing a game. Players who left to go pro aren't included.

Alex Gonye
Gonye was a highly-touted forward out of Deerfield Academy who was ranked 103rd on the final 2012 NHL Draft North American skater rankings. Never drafted, Gonye left after recording one assist in six games as a freshman last year. He's currently at Division III Williams College, where he has a goal and two assists in nine contests.

Like Gonye, Martin left after his freshman season last year. The defenseman was held without a point in two games with Union. He joined the British Columbia Hockey League's Trail Smoke Eaters earlier this season, but was traded to the Merrit Centennials for future considerations on Jan 10. Between the two teams, he has three goals and eight assists in 35 games.

Tim Boyle
Boyle arrived at Union with great promise after getting drafted by the Ottawa Senators in the fourth round of the 2012 NHL Draft. But that potential wasn't on display at Union, as the blueliner was held to two assists in 15 games while racking up 25 penalty minutes as a freshman in 2012-13. He left the program in Sept. 2013 to join the South Shore Kings of the U.S Premier Hockey League. After finishing last season there, he moved on to the Endicott College club hockey team. In 15 games with Endicott this year, Boyle has three goals and eight assists.

Trevor Mingoia
Mingoia came to Union after leading Berkshire School in scoring in 2010-11. The forward got off to a decent start at Union, recording three goals and three assists in 18 games as a freshman the following season. He left the team a couple weeks into the 2012-13 season and ended the year with the U.S Hockey League's Tri-City Storm. He's since become a star at Providence for ex-Union coach Nate Leaman, who originally recruited him to Schenectady. Mingoia, now a junior, leads the Friars in goals (11) and points (20).

Tyson Fulton
Fulton was ranked 187th on the final 2010 NHL Draft North American skater rankings. Never selected, he came to Union in 2011-12 after a season with the USHL's Waterloo Black Hawks. He only appeared in three games as a freshman and didn't record a point. The forward missed the following season with a hand injury before departing and finding a home with Division III St. John's (MN). Now a junior, the Minnesota native has stockpiled six goals and six assists in 36 career games with the Johnnies.

Mike Ingoldsby
Ingoldsby, a defenseman, had one point in 13 games as a freshman in 2010-11. A junior hockey teammate of Jeremy Welsh on the Ontario Junior Hockey League's Oakville Blades, Ingoldsby had to retire from hockey after battling concussion issues.

Jean-Sebastian Bergeron
The defenseman was at Union from 2009-11, but never received playing time. He left after his sophomore season and later had two helpers in 11 games for Concordia University in 2011-12.

Carl Ekstrom
Ekstrom, an import from Sweden, redshirted as a freshman in 2008-09. Midway through the following year, he left the program without ever playing a game and transferred to Division III St. Norbert. The defenseman went on to play 78 games there from 2009-13, registering eight goals and 26 assists.

Brett Bothwell
Bothwell, a goalie, came to Union for the 2008-09 season after Wayne State dropped its Division I hockey program. But Bothwell left Union in December of that season without ever seeing game action. He went on to play 10 games over two seasons in Canada with Mount Royal University.

Randy Hanagan
Hanagan was looked at as a potential impact forward when he joined Union for the 2008-09 season. Union fans never saw that potential get realized. The former Salmon Arm Silverbacks standout left after scoring a pair of goals in seven contests and returned home to his native Ontario. He played a few more seasons in Canada, including stops with the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League's Saint Marys Lincolns and the University of Western Ontario.
