FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PROVIDENCE, RI – Junior forward Josh Jooris scored two goals and the Union College men’s ice hockey team advanced to the NCAA East Regional Final with a 5-1 win over defending NCAA champion Boston College at the Dunkin Donuts Center Saturday night. The #12 Dutchmen improved to 22-12-5 while the #6 Eagles finish 22-12-4.

Union will face ECAC Hockey rival Quinnipiac with a chance to return to the Frozen Four. Game time Sunday is 6:30 p.m.

It was the first time these programs met, and the defending national champions had won three of the last five NCAA titles. It was only the fifth time this season that the Eagles had given up five or more goals. Daniel Carr and Wayne Simpson had two assists each for the Dutchmen.

BC’s first opportunity came when Johnny Gaudreau spun around at the Union blue line after a feed and broke in but was stopped by Grosenick 3:50 into the contest. The play produced an Eagle power play, and the best chance for BC was with 14:16 left when a drive from the point from Steven Whitney was tipped and rang off the crossbar.

Union went man up at 8:03, and it didn’t’ take long for the Dutchman to take advantage of this advantage. The Dutchmen took a 1-0 lead when Daniel Carr battled for a loose puck along the right boards and fed Kevin Sullivan at the top of the right circle. Sullivan quickly dished to an open Josh Jooris on the other circle, who one-timed a slapper high above the blocker side of Parker Milner for his 11th of the season at 9:25.

Shayne Gostisbehere stole a loose puck along the left boards at 11:26 and came in close on the let corner but his wrister went high over the top shelf. BC got another power play at 12:43, with only one excellent Eagle chance on that Union penalty. Destry Straight was on the doorstep but a bouncing puck from a pass went over his stick and passed by without harm.

Union’s Matt Wilkins made a pretty deke around the right defenseman in the BC zone with 2:24 left in the first, but his backhander was stopped by Milner. The Eagles’ Bill Arnold had a hit from behind with 51 seconds left in the period, but right at the end of the stanza, Carr was called for goalie interference. Union outshot BC, 11-7 in the first period.

The Dutchmen then came out strong to open the second period and with only 1:04 off the clock, they suddenly had a 3-0 lead. Simpson passed to Jooris who wasted no time in notching his second of the night, getting around the defenseman to be open on the left slot for a quick wrister and #12 of the season. The second shot of the period also beat Milner, a laser drive into the top of the net from the left circle from Cole Ikkala at 1:04, his third of the season.

Grosenick kept BC scoreless with a huge glove save in the slot from a Bill Arnold shot soon after the second score. The teams traded off power plays but Union’s man up on an Eagle holding call at 11:33 produced many glistening chances. Milner stopped Kyle Bodie directly in front and a backhander of the rebound was also stopped at 11:59.

After a Union potential three-on-one was broken up by defenseman Patch Alber on the right side with over two minutes to play in the period, Union kept the pressure on during another power play. Gostisbehere passes from Matt Hatch and Carr and fired a high drive from the middle of the point at 18:16. It was 4-0 after the defenseman’s eighth of the season. The Dutchmen defense kept the Eagles to just 14 total shots through two periods, while putting 27 on Milner.

With the Dutchmen on a power play at 5:19 of the third, Daniel Ciampini made it 5-0. Simpson led Coburn in on a rush up the left boards, and Coburn passed out in front when Ciampini tipped it in to Milner’s right for his 10th of the season.

The Eagles picked it up in the middle of the third with pressure. Pat Mullane and Gaudreau had close in scoring chances but Grosenick made back to back stops with just over 10 minutes to play in the third. BC had a rare four-on-one with just under eight minutes left but Gaudreau came in deep and Grosenick cut down the angle on the left post.

Boston College avoided the shutout when Gaudreau scored on a screen with a pass from Patrick Wey with 3:58 left to play.

Union outshot the Eagles, 35-30, and Grosenick made 29 saves and Miner stopped 30. Carr was the #3 star, the #2 star was Grosenick, and Jooris was named the #1 star.
