Dutchmen draw Big Green

by Ryan Fay

For the second straight year, Union will host Dartmouth in the ECAC Hockey quarterfinals.

The best-of-three series starts Friday night at Messa Rink and will continue Saturday and Sunday (if necessary) with all contests scheduled for 7 p.m.

The winner advances to the league semifinals at the Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid March 21.

Top-seeded Union had a first round bye and was slated to host the lowest remaining seed after the opening round. That turned out to be 10th-seeded Dartmouth, which eliminated 7th-seeded RPI in three games after a come-from-behind 5-4 win Sunday at the Houston Field House.

The Dutchmen swept the Big Green in the ECACH quarterfinals last year. Union picked up a 4-1 win in game one and a 5-2 victory in game two.

Union (24-6-4) continued its success against the Big Green this season, sweeping the regular season series with a 7-2 romp at Dartmouth on Nov. 1 and a 3-2 triumph at Messa Rink on Dec. 11.

But the Big Green (10-18-4) have enjoyed a late season surge, going 6-2-1 over their last nine games.
