Ridding commits to Dutchwomen

by Ryan Fay

Union has picked up a commitment for next season from Alexx Ridding, a goaltender for the Provincial Women's Hockey League's Barrie Junior Sharks.

Ridding went 8-10-1 in 20 games this season, but ranked sixth in the PWHL in save percentage (.936), eighth in saves (553) and 12th in goals against average (1.94). The 17-year-old had two shutouts.

"Alexx is [one of] the most focused and intense goaltenders that I've ever worked with," said Sharks head coach Alicia Ramolla. "These qualities have made the difference between winning and losing games for us. When she puts her mind to it, she is truly unstoppable."

Ramolla, a defenseman for Connecticut from 2003-2007, sees big things for Ridding at Union.

"With Division I coaching, Alexx has the potential to be one of the best goalies in [ECAC Hockey]," Ramolla said.

It will probably be awhile before that potential is realized. Shenae Lundberg, a senior next season, is entrenched as the starter. Madeleine Dahl, a junior next season, will likely continue to serve as Lundberg's primary backup after posting a .929 save percentage in seven games this season.

But Ridding, a 5-foot-6 native of Barrie, Ontario, could be groomed to take over the reigns in couple seasons.

Union's pursuit of Ridding likely accelerated after third-string goaltender Emma Pincott opted not to return for her sophomore season
