The Hobey Baker Award Hat Trick finalists were announced Wednesday, and Union junior defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere wasn't one of them.
The finalists are Boston College junior forward Johnny Gaudreau, St. Cloud State senior forward Nic Dowd and St. Lawrence senior forward Greg Carey.
Gostisbehere, the only defenseman who was named among the 10 finalists on March 20, didn't lack credentials. A third-round pick by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2012 NHL draft, Gostisbehere has eight goals and 21 assists 40 games. He was named co-ECAC Hockey Player of the Year and co-Best Defensive Defenseman.
But being a defenseman made it an uphill battle. The last blueliner to crack the Hobey Hat Trick was Boston University's Matt Gilroy, who won the award in 2009. Only five other defensemen have captured the award, which has been handed out since 1981.
Gaudreau, the reigning Hockey East Player of the Year, is considered the favorite to win. He leads the country in scoring with 35 goals and 42 assists in 39 games. His 77 points are the most of any Division I player in 11 seasons.
Dowd was St. Cloud State's second-leading scorer with 22 goals and 18 assists in 38 games. He was a first-team NCHC selection and the conference's Best Defensive Forward.
Carey, who shared ECACH Player of the Year honors with Gostisbehere, collected 18 goals and 39 assists in 38 games. His assist total was second in the country to Gaudreau.
The winner will be named at the Frozen Four April 11 in Philadelphia.
