HAMDEN, CT -- Union isn't done yet.
The Dutchmen (19-17-2) staved off elimination with a 3-2 win over Quinnipiac in game two of the ECAC Hockey quarterfinals on Saturday at High Point Solutions Arena.
The win evened the best-of-three series at one game apiece. Game three is slated for 4 p.m. Sunday with the victors advancing to the league semifinals next Friday in Lake Placid.
Michael Pontarelli provided the dagger for Union at 16:07 of the third period. With the game even at 2-2, Pontarelli was in front of Quinnipiac's net when he took a centering pass from Nick Cruice and one-timed it past Bobcats goalie Michael Garteig. The tally was Pontarelli's third goal in as many games.
Early on, it seemed like Quinnipiac (22-10-4) was going to ride the momentum generated by its 4-3 triple overtime win in game one on Friday. Sam Anas, who scored twice in that game, lit the lamp again at 3:46 of the first to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
That edge proved to be short-lived. Union responded 27 seconds later when Ryan Scarfo knocked in a rebound following a shot by JC Brassard.
Matthew Peca gave the Bobcats a 2-1 advantage at 6:18 of the second, but Max Novak answered for Union just over seven minutes later. He flew down the right side and put a shot on net. Garteig stopped it, but Novak dove for the rebound and banged it into the back of the cage.
Colin Stevens turned aside 31 shots for Union with the biggest being a sprawling glove save on Soren Jonzzon late in the second that kept the game nodded at 2-2.
Union picked up two assists from Daniel Ciampini, who pushed his season points total 50 and tied Daniel Carr's team record for points in a season in the process. Carr set the record last year.
Garteig had 25 saves for Quinnipiac, which had won seven of its last eight games against the Dutchmen.
End notes: Union defenseman Sebastien Gingras appeared in his 100th career game... the junior notched an assist on Scarfo's goal.
