One of the themes in Union's recent downturn was a lack of sixty minute efforts.
There were games when the Dutchmen had impressive stretches, but then the team would vanish for parts of the same game.
On Saturday, the Dutchmen put forth a strong sixty minute effort and breezed to a 6-1 win over Princeton (1-4-1 overall, 1-3-1 ECAC Hockey) at Messa Rink.
The win snapped a six-game winless streak (0-5-1) and gave the Dutchmen (6-5-1, 1-4-1) their first ECACH win of the season.
It was an all-around effort. They held Princeton to 16 shots on the goal, the fewest allowed to any opponent so far this season. They killed five-of-six Princeton power plays, a night after giving up three power play goals on four chances in a 4-3 loss to Quinnipiac. They scored three times on five power play opportunities.
"We’ve put together periods here and there, but we were able to play a full 60," said Union's Daniel Ciampini, who recorded his second career hat trick and finished with a career-best five points. "It's great to get a bunch of points, but I think the win is a lot bigger than my personal success."
Union head coach Rick Bennett liked what he saw from his team.
"They were definitely consistent in all areas," he said. "They managed the lines tonight, which was nice to see. They finished their hits. It was a complete game all around."
Ciampini, who was on the ice for all six Union goals, put the Dutchmen on the board after taking a feed from Jeff Taylor and beating Tigers goalie Ben Halford at 6:11 of the first.
Aaron Ave's power play goal brought the Tigers even just over four minutes later, but Jeff Taylor regained the lead for the Dutchmen at 18:24. He fired a shot from just inside the blueline that seemed to catch Halford off guard.
"It was a lucky shot," said Taylor, who finished with the goal and three assists. "I was just trying to get it through. There was a guy right on me, and it was lucky it went in."
Union buried the Tigers with a three-goal second period. Ryan Scarfo made it 3-1 at 4:59 before Ciampini and Mike Vecchione addded power-play tallies later in the period.
"This morning, we talked about how important special teams are," Ciampini said. "We got two good opportunities there, and we took advantage of it."
Ciampini cemented the hat trick with a power-play marker at 10:12 of the third. His other hat trick came against Boston College in last season's NCAA Frozen Four semifinal.
After sitting in favor of Alex Sakellaropoulos the past two games, Niskayuna native Colin Stevens received the start in goal for the Dutchmen. He was rarely tested and finished with 15 saves.
"It felt great,” Stevens said. “Obviously, Alex earned the net there. He played really well for a few games. But it was nice to get back in the net tonight and get a win."
The game marked the end of the first chunk of Union's schedule. The Dutchmen are off next week for exams before hitting the road for nine straight games, beginning with a trip to Notre Dame for the Shillelagh Tournament Nov. 28-29.
"It's nice to end on a positive note instead of another loss," Taylor said. "I think this was huge for us."

Bobcats clip reeling Dutchmen, 4-3 (w/ video, audio)
Box Score
by Ryan Fay
It appeared as if Union was headed towards its fourth straight overtime game.
But Quinnpiac's Travis St. Denis had other ideas. He scored a power-play goal with 51.7 seconds left in the third period to break a 3-3 tie and lift the 20th-ranked Bobcats to a 4-3 win over the 12th-ranked Dutchmen Friday at Messa Rink.
The loss left the Dutchmen (5-5-1 overall, 0-4-1 ECAC Hockey) winless in their past six games (0-5-1), including a four-game slide at Messa Rink (0-4-1).
St. Denis was left uncontested along the right wing when he drove the net and sent the puck past Union goalie Alex Sakellaropoulos.
“It was a bit lucky,” St. Denis said. “My linemates were going to the net hard and created some opening in the net. I’ve got to give the credit to them. I saw a bit of an opening, and I put the puck in the net.”

“It was a bit lucky,” St. Denis said. “My linemates were going to the net hard and created some opening in the net. I’ve got to give the credit to them. I saw a bit of an opening, and I put the puck in the net.”
The power play was set up following a boarding call against Ryan Scarfo at 18:39.
"He’s not the only one who’s taken an ill-advised penalty. He’s probably only thinking of what he’s seen before," said Union head coach Rick Bennett. "It probably doesn't help when the coach is saying to finish your hits all the time, yelling hit, hit, hit. Maybe it's on me, and I have to relax a bit."
A video replay suggested that Quinnipiac (6-2-1, 3-0-0) was offsides on the decisive goal. It appeared as if St. Denis had entered the Union zone a step ahead of Michael Peca, who fed him the puck.
“It’s pretty blatant," Bennett said. "To have a game to go like that, it stinks. It’s too bad, but it is what it is. I didn’t think it was a great goal against by us. These are just growing moments that we have to respond in these times of adversity. We have to put this behind us as quickly as possible.”

Did the expectation of an offsides call impact Union's play on St. Denis' goal?
“Quite possibly, because I think everybody in the town of Schenectady thought it was [offsides] besides one person," Bennett said. "But that’s all that matters.”
Including St. Denis' game-winner, the Bobcats scored on three-of-four power-plays. Anas potted one in the final seconds of the first that evened the game at 1-1. Tim Clifton's at 9:23 of the third gave the Bobcats a 3-2 lead. Union entered the night having killed 25-of-30 power plays this season.
“They’re a good hockey team. They have a pretty good power play,” said Union's Max Novak, who tied the game at 3-3 at 11:00 of the third. “We pride ourselves on a good PK. Tonight, it didn’t come through for us."

Union's power-play fared better. It went 2-for-2, marking the unit's first goals since Oct. 31 at RPI. Daniel Ciampini's opened the scoring at 5:13 of the first and Jeff Taylor's tied the score at 2-2 at 3:55 of the third.
Landon Smith scored the Bobcats' lone even strength goal at 3:54 of the second. It gave the Bobcats a 2-1 lead and came in a stretch when the Dutchmen vanished. They didn't register a shot on goal for the first 15 minutes of the period.
"We seem to be doing that once a game," said Union's Matt Wilkins, who set up Novak's game-tying goal in the third. "If we can play a full sixty, we can compete with anybody. It's the little things. We're making too many turnovers and not getting pucks deep. It's just the willingness to stick to our game."
Sakellaropoulos finished with 31 saves in what was his second straight start. Bennett said the sophomore "earned" the start and added that usual starter Colin Stevens is healthy.

Union resumes play tonight at 7 at Messa Rink with a matchup against Princeton, which dropped a 3-1 decision at RPI Friday.
End notes... Union defenseman Sebastien Gingras was out after getting hit from behind last Saturday against Harvard... freshman Connor Light replaced him and made his debut... "He was pretty good on the penalty kill, and provided a bit of a presence back there," Bennett said. "I saw him trying to finish hits. That's what he does."

Union wins national championship (with video, audio)
Box Score
by Ryan Fay
PHILADELPHIA, PA -- There's no time like the first time.
Led by defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere, the Union men's hockey team captured the program's first national championship with a 7-4 win over Minnesota in the national championship game Saturday at the Wells Fargo Center.
Gostisbehere finished the game with a goal, two assists and a plus-7 rating. He was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Frozen Four.
"It was really awesome," he said. "It feels like we're dreaming right now, but sometimes dreams come true."
"I'm just extremely excited for our program, our school, for the community," he said. "For every player that has worn that jersey, for every coach that's coached here before us, I think it's a tremendous accomplishment. I want to thank them. Obviously I can't name them all, but it's just a surreal moment right now."

"It was really awesome," he said. "It feels like we're dreaming right now, but sometimes dreams come true."
Union (32-6-4) finished the season on a 17-game unbeaten streak and was the only team in the country to reach the 30-win plateau.
"It's unbelievable the growth this program has taken over the past probably eight years," said Union senior defenseman Mat Bodie. "I've only been here for four of them, but this championship is for anyone that's ever had a hand in Union hockey because we wouldn't be here without all those players before us. We learned a lot from them, and they broke us into college hockey, and we're forever grateful for that."

We learned a lot from them, and they broke us into college hockey, and we're forever grateful for that."
Union head coach Rick Bennett, who has been with the program since being hired as an assistant in 2005, had similar thoughts.
Minnesota (28-7-6) and Union entered the game among the top ten defenses in the country, but that was hardly evident in the first period when the two teams combined for six goals and 35 shots.
The Gophers, who have won five national championships, grabbed a 1-0 lead when Justin Kloos cashed in on a rebound off a shot from Nate Condon at 2:37.
Shayne Gostisbehere tied the game at 1-1 with a wrister from the slot at 9:26, but Minnesota reclaimed the lead 27 seconds later when Sam Warning beat Stevens from the bottom of the left circle.
Union's offense responded with three goals in a span of 1:54 to take a 4-2 lead. Mike Vecchione started the burst when he put in a loose puck to even the score at 2-2 at 15:09.
"We talked about pack of wolves goals," said Union forward Daniel Carr. "Just being around the net, and guys buying in and going to those hard areas. That was kind of it. Ciampini did a great job with the puck there, and all three of us went to the net. Vecchione put it right upstairs."
Just under a minute later, Eli Lichtenwald capitalized on a rebound after Gostisbehere had a shot blocked. Daniel Ciampini finished the flurry when he knocked in a rebound off a shot from Max Novak at 17:03.

Taylor Camaratta sliced Union's lead to 4-3 at 1:13 of the second, but Novak gave the Dutchmen a two goal cushion when he redirected Kevin Sullivan's shot past Gophers goalie Adam Wilcox at 5:31 of the third.
Hudson Fasching's power play tally at 16:20 kept Minnesota in the game, but Union scored two late goals to secure the title. After Gostisbehere blocked a Minnesota shot, Sullivan raced to the other end and beat Wilcox five-hole to put Union ahead 6-4 at 18:38. Bodie tacked on an empty-netter in the final minute.
"We believed we belonged with the big boys, and hopefully some people start to realize that Union hockey is here for good now," said Bodie.
A subject for another day
It's widely expected that Gostisbehere, a junior, will surrender his senior season and sign with the NHL's Philadelphia Flyers, the team that drafted him in the third round of the 2012 NHL draft.
But for the time being, Gostisbehere isn't worried about turning pro.
"I'm not really thinking about that right now," he said. "I'm just thinking about all the hard work we put in this year to get that right there, and just having fun with my teammates right now and how we send off the seniors perfectly as champions. Just thinking about that right now with my team."
Stats
Novak's goal proved to be the game-winner. It was eighth such goal of the season, which set a new single-season program record. Wayne Simpson had the old mark of seven, set in 2012-2013.
Carr, a senior, finishes his Union career with 78 goals and 79 assists. With 157 points, he leaves as the highest scorer in the program's 23-year Division I history and ranks third in school history behind Terry Campbell's 170 and Tod Fobare's 167.
With 50 points (22 goals, 28 assists) in 39 games this season, Carr averaged 1.28 points per game. That matches the single-season program record, set by Craig Ferrero in 1991-1992, the program's first Division I season.
Union's senior class -- Bodie, Carr, Cole Ikkala, Matt Hatch and Kevin Sullivan -- led the Dutchmen to a 104-37-20 record over the past four seasons. No other senior class in program history won as many games.

AUDIO: Former Union goalie Kris Mayotte
by Ryan Fay
In advance of Friday's game against St. Lawrence, I chatted with Saints assistant coach Kris Mayotte, a goaltender at Union from 2002-2006.
In his four years between the pipes for Union, Mayotte won 46 games, a number still unsurpassed in the program's Division I era. Prior to joining St. Lawrence's staff this season, he spent a year as a volunteer assistant coach at Cornell.
Mayotte discusses his budding coaching career, his time at Union, St. Lawrence star Greg Carey, Friday's tilt, and more.

The interview, which was conducted yesterday afternoon, runs just under 12 minutes.

AUDIO: Recalling Rick Bennett's college career with Mike McShane
by Ryan Fay
We all know Rick Bennett as the head coach who has had more success in less than two seasons than most previous Union coaches had over several years.
But back in the day, Rick Bennett was a standout college player. He played at Providence from 1986-1990 and scored 134 points in 128 games. During his time at Providence, he collected several accolades. Among them were a Hockey East All-Rookie selection in 1987, a second-team All-American nod in 1989, two team MVP awards, and Hobey Baker consideration in 1990.
A third round draft choice of the old Minnesota North Stars in 1986, Bennett would eventually get traded to the New York Rangers and ended up playing 15 games in the NHL during parts of three seasons. His playing days ended after the 1998-1999 season and he played in over 600 minor league games. Prior to arriving at Union, Bennett was an assistant coach at Providence from 2000-2005.
On Tuesday, I chatted with Mike McShane, Bennett's coach for the length of his playing career at Providence. Now the head coach at Division III power Norwich, McShane recalls recruiting Bennett, if he thought Bennett would end up coaching, why his pro career may have been hindered, memorable games, and more.

AUDIO: Rick Bennett pre-practice 1/24/13
by Ryan Fay
Prior to Thursday's practice, Union men's hockey head coach Rick Bennett spoke with the media.
The second-year head coach talked about Saturday's game with RPI and offered health updates on Shawn Stuart and Josh Jooris.
Stuart has missed the past three games with an upper-body injury. Jooris, who got on the ice today, sat out Tuesday's game against Harvard after taking a stick to the facemask in last Saturday's win over Colgate.

AUDIO: Mougenel on Julseth-White
| Julseth-White earlier this season (ecachockey.com) |
In his four years with the Dutchmen, Nolan Julseth-White was consistently one of the best defensemen on the roster. Since graduating last spring, the former captain has been playing with the Las Vegas Wranglers of the ECHL (one step below the AHL). In 36 games, he has two goals and 14 assists, better offensive numbers than he ever had at Union. He's seen as a candidate for next week's ECHL All-Star game in Loveland, Colorado.
For an update on Julseth-White, I chatted with his head coach, Ryan Mougenel. The Las Vegas coach discusses what impresses him about Julseth-White, his potential, and more.
Listen to Mougenel's remarks here or via the player below. The mp3 runs just under five minutes.
