FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ – Junior goaltender Troy Grosenick made 34 saves to lead No. 18/RV Union College to a 5-0 victory over No. 11/10 Yale University in an ECAC Hockey Semifinal Game at Boardwalk Hall Friday night. With the victory, the Dutchmen return to the title game for the second straight season to face Brown, Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Brown upset top ranked Quinnipiac, 4-0 in the earlier Semifinal. The Dutchmen, who will look for their second straight Whitelaw Cup, are 20-12-5 while the Bulldogs fell to 18-11-3.

With the win, Union extended its season-best winning streak to five games

Grosenick recorded his seventh career shutout and first in his playoff career. Union got goals from Wayne Simpson, Daniel Carr, Max Novak and Josh Jooris, all coming in the first two periods, while freshman Matt Wilkins dished out two assists.

Yale entered the playoffs with wins in 14 of the last 17 regular season conference games. The Dutchmen entered this contest with eight wins in the last nine playoff games dating back to last season’s memorable run to the Frozen Four.

Matt Hatch came across the net and had a low drive just wide with a low drive to the left of the net. The Dutchmen opened the scoring at 2:59. Greg Coburn had a feed from in his own zone to Kyle Bodie, and on a two-on-one, Bodie dished to Wayne Simpson streaking on the left side. Siimpson wristed home his 16th of the season high on the glove side for the 1-0 Dutchman advantage.

The Dutchmen continued the pressure with a Josh Jooris drive from the right circle what was almost tipped in by Daniel Carr on the doorstep with 14:19 left.

Yale got the first power play of the night at 7:24. Kenny Agostino had the best chance for Yale with a wrister from the middle of the blueline that was stopped by Troy Grosenick with traffic in front. Sebastian Gingras had a nice low tip worthy drive through a crowd but Nick Maricic made a nice quick pad save with 7:34 remaining in the first. Under a minute later, Hatch took a slapper from the top of the left circle but Maricic made a strong low glove save.

The Dutchmen made it 2-0 with 4:51 left. A rebound was picked up by Matt Wilkins, who found Daniel Carr on the left circle. Carr’s slapper broke through the pads of Maricic for the junior’s 15th of the season.

Yale’s Clinton Bourbonais skated in front with 1:33 left in the period and tried to tuck one through Grosenick but was denied in the crease. Union outshot the Bulldogs, 14-11 in the first period.

Just 21 seconds into the second period, the Dutchmen took a commanding 3-0 lead. Greg Coburn fed Kevin Sullivan from the Union end and Sullivan passed to Max Novak, who broke in behind the defense open on the right side and came in close to deke Maricic for his seventh of the season. Yale got a power play at 2:57 and put four shots on Grosenick, including a turnaround drive from Agostino that the junior goaltender quickly padded away.

The Bulldogs had a giveaway in their zone that was gathered by Wilkins on the right boards, and he took a shot from the right circle that was tipped in by Jooris at the five minute mark for a 4-0 lead. It was Jooris’ 10th of the season. The pressure continued and Maricic made a diving turnaround backhand blind save on Daniel Ciampini 1:11 later on a delayed penalty call on Yale. During the penalty, the best opportunity for a 5-0 lead came when Jooris’ shot from the bottom of the left circle found pipe.

Grosenick made 13 saves to keep Yale scoreless in the second period, as the Bulldogs had a 13-8 shot advantage.
Yale got a power play opportunity with 12:24 left, and although they kept the puck in the zone for almost the entire man up, Union kept the quality opportunities low. Antoine Laganiere was stopped on a shot from the top of the left circle, the best chance during this power play.

Neither team generated any major scoring chances in a third period that featured numerous power plays, including a Yale four-on-three midway through the stanza. But with 26 seconds left, Sam Coatta notched his second of the season with an assist from Cole Ikkala. Union outshot Yale, 13-10 in the third and 35-34 for the game.

Maricic finished with 30 saves on the night.

Union tied Brown in Providence earlier this season, 3-3, and posted a 2-0 home victory.
