The Union women's hockey team opened the regular season with a 3-2 non-conference road win over the University of Connecticut on Saturday.
Kathryn Tomaselli gave the Dutchwomen a 1-0 edge with eight seconds left in the first period, but the lead didn't last long as Rachel Farrel tied it up for UConn at 2:03 of the second period.
Just under seven minutes later, Bryanne Panchuk put Union back on top, 2-1. Maddy Norton pushed the lead to 3-1 with a power-play tally late in the second period. Freshman defenseman Kathryn Davis collected her first collegiate assist on the goal.
Farrel struck again at 6:39 of the third period to make it 3-2, but that's as close as it would get.
Union (1-0) outshot UConn, 46-29. Shenae Lundberg picked up 27 saves for the Dutchwomen.
The win marks the second consecutive season that Union opened the regular season with a 3-2 win over UConn. Last year's game was played at Messa Rink.
Union begins the home portion of their regular season schedule when they host Providence Friday at 7 pm.
