Dutchwomen tie RIT, 1-1

by Ryan Fay

Box Score

Union and RIT were fit to be tied Saturday, skating to 1-1 non-conference overtime draw at Messa Rink.

Making her first start of the season and just the second of her career, sophomore goaltender Madeleine Dahl kept Union in the game, amassing a career-high 48 saves on a day when the Dutchwomen were outshot 49-24.

Her 48 saves, which included 26 in the first period, were the most a Dutchwomen netminder recorded in a single game since Kate Gallagher turned aside 52 in a 2-2 overtime tie against St. Lawrence on Nov. 5, 2011.

The tie kept Union (7-12-1) from picking up its eighth win of the season, which would have broken a program high set during the 2012-2013 campaign.

Despite the shot discrepancy, Union struck first. Jessica Kaminsky redirected an Alex Tancrell-Fontaine point shot on the power play at 11:47 of the first period to give the Dutchwomen a 1-0 lead.

The score would stay that way until 10:12 of the third when Marissa Maugeri tied the game at 1-1. She deked the puck past Dahl's pad and into the right side of the net.

The Dutchwomen had two power play opportunities in regulation following Maugeri's goal, but couldn't capitalize on the four combined shots generated. Union's power play finished 1-for-5.

Union gave RIT a power play in overtime when Mac Purvis was whistled for checking at 2:07, but Dahl made a trio of big saves and the Dutchwomen penalty kill stood tall.

Union's penalty kill, which has struggled for most of the season, ended the game 6-for-6 after going 3-for-3 in Friday's 2-1 overtime win over the Tigers (9-11-2).

The Dutchwomen return to action on Friday with an ECAC matchup against Princeton at Messa Rink. Gametime is 7 p.m.
