Dutchmen take quarterfinal opener

by Ryan Fay

Union started the postseason on a high note, skating to a 3-0 win over Dartmouth in game one of an ECAC Hockey tournament quarterfinal series Friday at Messa Rink.

The victory extended Union's nation-best unbeaten streak to 10 games (9-0-1).

The top-seeded Dutchmen can punch their ticket to next weekend's championship round in Lake Placid with a win over the 10th-seeded Big Green tonight at 7. If necessary, game three is Sunday at 7 p.m.

Union (25-6-4) received a 32-save shutout from junior goalie Colin Stevens, who ran his shutout streak to 129:07 and set a new program record with six shutouts in a single season.

His biggest save of the night came at 12:19 of the third period with Dartmouth on a 4-on-3 power play. Eric Neiley was left wide open in the left circle, but Stevens saw the shot and made a terrific glove save.

It preserved Union's 1-0 lead, which came on a Michael Pontarelli power play goal at 1:12 of the second.

Daniel Carr helped Union pull away late in the third. The senior was awarded a penalty shot after he was pulled down by Grant Opperman on a breakaway at 17:23.

Carr made good on the penalty shot, beating Dartmouth goalie Charles Grant stick side for Union's first successful penalty shot since Glenn Sanders against Harvard on Jan. 4, 2003.

Carr's team-leading 19th goal of the season, an empty-netter at 18:34, sealed the win.
