Carr signs with Canadiens

Union senior forward Daniel Carr is taking his game north of the border.

Carr signed a two-year, free-agent deal with the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday. Financial terms were not disclosed.

"It's pretty exciting," said Carr. "I wouldn't be here without Union hockey, all my teammates and the coaching staff."

Carr, 22, said other teams were interested, but that Montreal was the best fit.

"The people there are genuine people. They want to help you become a better hockey player," he said. "It's a winning culture. The history there is just unbelievable. To be a small part of that is an extreme honor."

Carr led NCAA Hockey champion Union with 50 points (22 g, 28 a) this season. His 50 points were the most by a Dutchmen during a single-season at the Division I level.

Carr ended the season with a 12-game point streak and paced Union in postseason scoring with 14 points (5 g, 9 a) in 12 games.

He was named Most Outstanding Player of the ECAC Hockey Tournament and earned first-team All-ECACH and second-team All-America honors.

The Sherwood Park, Alberta native finished his Union career as the program's Division I era leader in goals (78) and points (157).

Carr is expected to join the Canadiens for development camp this summer. If he can't crack Montreal's opening night roster in the fall, he will likely be sent to the club's AHL affiliate, the Hamilton Bulldogs.

Carr is the third Union player to turn pro this offseason. Senior defenseman Mat Bodie signed with the New York Rangers as a free agent. Junior defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere gave up his senior season to sign with the Philadelphia Flyers, the team that drafted him in the third round of the 2012 NHL draft.
