Dutchmen to travel to Maine

by Ryan Fay

Before he committed to Union, sophomore defenseman Sebastien Gingras was committed to the University of Maine.

In October, he'll get a chance to show Maine what could have been. The Dutchmen will travel to Alfond Arena to take on the Black Bears on Oct. 17 and 18.

The trip will also serve as a homecoming of sorts for Union volunteer assistant coach John Ronan, who played collegiately at Maine from 2001 to 2005.

The meetings will mark the first between the teams since the 2009-2010 season, when Union opened its regular season with a two-game sweep of visiting Maine.

Union last played at Alfond Arena during the 2008-2009 campaign and suffered a two-game sweep.

The Black Bears, who are coached by ex-Yale assistant coach Red Gendron, hold the Division I era series lead 5-2.

Other expected out of conference dates include a home game against New Hampshire on Oct. 11, home games versus St. Cloud State on Oct. 24-25 and a road game at Boston University on Jan 3. Union will also take part in the inaugural Frozen Holiday Classic on Dec. 27-28 in Bridgeport, CT. The four-team field also includes Sacred Heart, UMass-Lowell and UConn.

It's possible there could be a couple additional out of conference contests.
