Dutchwomen edge Huskies, 1-0

Box Score

by Ryan Fay

Union women's hockey goalie Shenae Lundberg stopped 58 shots against Quinnipiac on Nov. 15.

She did one better in her follow-up performance on Tuesday. Lundberg turned aside a career-high 59 shots to register her fifth career shutout and lead Union to a 1-0 non-conference win over Northeastern at Matthews Arena.

The 59 saves set an NCAA Division I women's hockey record for the most saves in a shutout. Women's hockey began to be recognized as a Division I sport starting with the 2000-01 season.

"She played great. She made a lot of point blank saves," said Northeastern head coach Dave Flint. "It was one of those nights. You see it developing, and she gained momentum as the game went on."

Lundberg was tested early and often as the Dutchwomen were badly outshot, 59-23, by a Northeastern team that entered the night winners of four of its last six, including a win over then-ranked sixth-ranked Boston University.

Overall, the Huskies (6-8-3) attempted 119 shots, including 59 shots on goal, 23 shots wide, and 37 shots blocked by Union's defense.

Union, which attempted only 38 shots, spent most of the game clinging to a 1-0 lead. Kathryn Tomaselli scored the game's only goal at 15:23 of the first period after she beat Huskies netminder Chole Desjardins on a one-on-one bid from in close. The goal was her team-leading fourth of the season.

Northeastern came closest to getting on the board at the end of the first period. McKenna Brand beat Lundberg as time expired, but the goal was waived off following a review because it was scored a split-second too late.

Forwards Erica Kelly, Jamie Smith and Jessica Kaminsky led Union (2-10-2) in blocked shots with four apiece.

"They played gritty," Flint said of the Dutchwomen, who set a season-high with the 37 blocked shots. "It was like we were playing against six goalies."

The win marked the Dutchwomen's first-ever victory against Northeastern, which came into play 6-0-0 all-time against Union. It also snapped Union's nine-game winless streak (0-7-2).

Desjardins finished with 22 stops, including one a 2-on-1 chance by forward Hannah Erickson late in the second period.

The Dutchwomen resume ECAC Hockey action this weekend with home dates against Yale (Dec. 5, 7 p.m.) and Brown (Dec. 6, 4 p.m.)
