CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Union snapped a three-game losing streak in ECAC Hockey action with a 5-4 win against fourth-ranked Harvard on Friday at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center.
Union (13-10-2 overall, 5-7-1 ECACH) was led by its top forward line of Matt Wilkins, Mike Vecchione and Daniel Ciampini. The trio combined for four goals and five assists. Ciampini had two of each, while Wilkins had a goal and two assists. Vecchione added one of each.
The unit has nine goals and 15 assists in two games since debuting as a line in last Saturday's 8-3 win over RPI in the non-league Mayor's Cup game.
Union grabbed an early 1-0 lead after Ciampini tipped in a pass from Jeff Taylor 21 seconds into the opening period. The Crimson (12-5-2, 8-4-2) got it back at 2:47 on a goal from Kyle Criscuolo.
The teams combined for five goals in a busy second period. After Jake Horton gave Harvard a 2-1 lead 58 seconds into the frame, Union went up 3-2 on goals from Theo DiPauli and Wilkins less than four minutes apart.
Jimmy Vesey answered for Harvard at 7:11 to nod the game at 3-3, but Ciampini's second tally of the game gave the Dutchmen a 4-3 edge at 10:05.
Vecchione pushed Union's lead to 5-3 at 12:10 of the third after he blasted a slapshot from the left circle past Crimson goalie Steve Michalek and into the upper corner of the net. Victor Newell cut Union's advantage to 5-4 at 19:09, but Harvard never found the equalizer.
Union received 26 saves from Alex Sakellaropoulos while Michalek turned aside 21 for the Crimson.
The win extended Union's unbeaten streak against Harvard to 11 games (9-0-2).
The Dutchmen return to action tonight at 7 with a matchup at Dartmouth.
End notes: Wilkins appeared in his 100th career game for Union.... Taylor has seven assists in his last three games, including two on Friday.
