ITHACA, N.Y. – Union's offense finally broke through, but it wasn't enough as the Dutchmen dropped a 2-1 decision to Cornell on Saturday at Lynah Rink.
The loss was Union's fifth straight, and it guaranteed that the Dutchmen will open the ECAC Hockey tournament on the road in two weeks against a to-be-determined opponent. The last time Union wasn't home for the ECACH tournament was the 2006-07 season.
Daniel Ciampini cut Cornell's lead to 2-1 at 2:39 of the third period after he jammed in a rebound. The power play goal was Union's first tally in 223:40, the program's longest goal drought in 24 seasons as a Division I team. Mike Vecchione and Max Novak assisted on the goal, Ciampini's 24th of the season.
Cornell (11-11-5 overall, 9-8-3 ECACH) grabbed a 1-0 lead at 18:13 of the first when Dwyer Tschantz stuffed in a rebound seconds after a Union penalty expired. John Knisley's shorthanded goal gave Cornell a 2-0 advantage at 8:43 of the second.
Union picked up 18 saves from Colin Stevens, who started his seventh consecutive game after spending time in a rotation with Alex Sakellaropoulos. Mitch Gillam turned aside 26 shots for Cornell, which swept its season series against the Dutchmen.
The Dutchmen (6-13-1, 14-16-2) wrap up the regular season next weekend when they host St. Lawrence on Friday and Clarkson on Saturday.
