Gostisbehere officially shut down by Flyers

by Ryan Fay

Former Union defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere will not play again this season, Philadelphia Flyers general manager Ron Hextall announced Wednesday night.

Gostisbehere suffered a torn ACL in his left knee on Nov. 7 while playing with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, the Flyers' American Hockey League affiliate. He underwent surgery a week later, and began skating again in January.

At the time, there was hope that Gostisbehere would return before the end of the season.

But Phantoms coach Terry Murray said earlier this month that Ghostisbehere had been shut down. The Flyers initially rejected that claim, but made the announcement official on Wednesday after Gostisbehere met with doctors.

The prized 21-year-old is only five months removed from surgery.

“All the new research says eight-month [recovery] until it is fully healed,” Hextall told CSNPhilly.com.

Neither Philadelphia or Lehigh Valley are headed to the postseason.

“Is there a chance of him getting hurt?" Hextall asked. "Yes. And the risk is too high to take the chance. The risk-reward does not add up."

Gostisbehere is expected to be completely healthy for training camp, which starts in September.
