Welsh, who was an unrestricted free agent, spent last season with the Chicago Wolves, St. Louis' American Hockey League affiliate. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound forward set career high's in games (75), goals (20), assists (21) and points (41). His 41 points were fourth-most on the team.

The 27-year-old originally joined St. Louis' organization last July following a season in the Vancouver Canucks system. He became the first former Union player to record an NHL goal when he scored for the Canucks in a win over Columbus on Nov. 22, 2013.

Welsh had 53 goals and 47 assists in 119 career games with the Dutchmen from 2009-12. He gave up his senior season when he signed with the Carolina Hurricanes hours after Union's loss to Ferris State in the 2012 Frozen Four semifinals. The Hurricanes dealt Welsh to Vancouver prior to the 2013-14 season.
