Simpson sets ECHL postseason record

Former Union men's hockey forward Wayne Simpson set an ECHL record for the most points in a single postseason on Wednesday.

Simpson, who plays for the South Carolina Stingrays, had a goal and two assists in the team's 4-1 win over the Allen Americans in Game three of the Kelly Cup finals.

The performance pushed his playoff point total to 36, a new single-season postseason record in the league. The old mark of 34 was shared by Blaine Moore of Richmond (1995) and John Spoltore of Louisiana (2000).

Simpson, who starred at Union from 2009-13, has 12 goals and 24 assists in 23 playoff games.

The victory gave the Stingrays a 2-1 best-of-seven series lead over the Americans. Game four is Sunday at South Carolina.
