Forgaard lands in Las Vegas, joins Julseth-White

Former Union defensemen Ryan Forgaard and Nolan Julseth-White, teammates from 2009-2012, will be reunited this season.

Forgaard signed with the ECHL's Las Vegas Wranglers on Thursday. Julseth-White has played with Las Vegas since the start of last season.

"I am very excited to play with Nolan again," Forgaard said. "He was always a great teammate and a great guy. That did factor into my decision. He had great things to say about the organization and the people that surround you everyday along with the city of Las Vegas. I am extremely excited to get started and begin my professional career."

Forgaard was originally slated to start his professional career with Drakkars of the French Elite League. Forgaard and another former Union defenseman, Shawn Stuart, signed with Drakkars in June.

But the club announced on August 31 that Forgaard was moving on.

"I was in France for about a month and just felt that it was not the right fit for me and my hockey career," Forgaard said. "I spoke with my agent and asked to look for opportunities in North America and Las Vegas gave me an opportunity I couldn't turn down."

In 110 career games with Union, Forgaard collected nine assists.

Simpson to Providence Bruins camp

According to Mark Divver of the Providence Journal, the American Hockey League's Providence Bruins will invite ex-Union standout Wayne Simpson to training camp.

The Boxborough, Massachusetts native recently competed in Boston Bruins rookie camp, and spent time last summer in Bruins development camp.

Simpson, 23, scored 115 points (56 goals, 59 assists) in 153 career contests with Union.

Gallagher exits for Plymouth State

Union women's hockey volunteer assistant coach Kate Gallagher has been named an assistant coach at Division III Plymouth State.

Gallagher will be serving under third-year head coach Ashley Kilstein, who was a forward on the Dutchwomen from 2004-2008. Plymouth State finished last season with a 5-17-4 record, a four win improvement from the 2011-2012 campaign.

Gallagher joined the Union women's hockey staff last summer following the completion of a stellar four-year career between the pipes for the Dutchwomen.

She set program records in career goals against average (2.61) and save percentage (.924) and was a two-time team Most Valuable Player (2011, 2012).

Rambo selected in CWHL Draft

Former Union women's hockey forward Emma Rambo was drafted by the Boston Blades in Monday's Canadian Women's Hockey League draft.

Rambo, who graduated this spring, was the team's 13th round pick.

“I'm so excited and honored to be selected by such a high caliber team such as the Blades," Rambo said in a release. "I'm looking forward to continuing the Boston legacy and continuing my career in the next level."

The 22-year-old accumulated 14 points (seven goals, seven assists) in her four years at Union. She ranks second in program history with 135 career games played, trailing only Dania Simmonds and Rhianna Kurio, who appeared in 136 games apiece.

Kurio, one of Rambo's teammates at Union the past four seasons, was also selected in Monday's CWHL draft. Kurio was drafted by Alberta in the 12th round.

The five-team CWHL is the world's premier women's hockey league. In addition to Alberta and Boston, the league also has teams in Montreal, Toronto, and Brampton (Ontario). It was founded in 2007.

Kurio picked in CWHL Draft

Former Union women's hockey forward Rhianna Kurio was drafted by the Alberta Honeybadgers in the 12th round of Monday's Canadian Women's Hockey League draft.

Kurio, 21, wrapped up a four-year career with the Dutchwomen earlier this year. In 136 career games played, she picked up 27 points (13 goals, 14 assists). The Calgary, Alberta native is tied with Dania Simmonds for the most games played in program history.

The five-team CWHL is the world's premier women's hockey league. In addition to Alberta, the league also has teams in Boston, Montreal, Toronto, and Brampton (Ontario). It was founded in 2007.

Julseth-White re-signs with Wranglers

Former Union defenseman Nolan Julseth-White has re-signed with the ECHL's Las Vegas Wranglers, the club announced Thursday.

Julseth-White, the captain on Union's 2011-2012 Frozen Four team, appeared in 56 contests for the Wranglers last season. He scored three goals and added 18 assists while registering a plus-9 rating. His play in Las Vegas earned him a four-game stint with the American Hockey League's San Antonio Rampage and a single game with the AHL's Providence Bruins.

“Nolan is coming into his second year as a professional, but his maturity is far beyond that,” Wranglers head coach and general manager Mike Madill said in a release. “He is a tremendous athlete who plays every game like it’s the playoffs. If he gets a chance to climb to the American League, we may never get him back, but we’re excited that he’s chosen to start the year with us. He’s another true professional who logs a lot of minutes.”

Julseth-White, 25, is glad to return to the sin city.

“I’m excited to come back and play for a great organization and fans,” said Julseth-White. “With the group returning, I know Mike [Madill] will put together a winning product that is hungry for a championship.”

Joining Julseth-White in the ECHL is another former Union player, center Kyle Bodie, who signed with the Cincinnati Cyclones earlier this month. The two teams do not meet this year.

Kyle Bodie signs with Cyclones

The East Coast Hockey League's Cincinnati Cyclones announced Tuesday that they have signed former Union center Kyle Bodie.

Bodie accumulated 85 points (28 goals, 57 assists) in 122 career games with the Dutchmen. He was second on the team last season with 33 points (9 goals, 24 assists) in 40 games.

“Kyle is a great addition, having just wrapped up a tremendous college career,” Cyclones head coach Ben Simon said in a release. “He is a smart guy who can make plays at high speeds. We’re looking forward to watching him make the transition to the pro game.”

Bodie, 25, is the sixth member of last year's team to sign professionally this offseason. The other five are defenseman Greg Coburn (Ilves of the Finnish Elite League), goaltender Troy Grosenick (San Jose Sharks), center Josh Jooris (Calgary Flames), and defensemen Shawn Stuart and Ryan Forgaard (both with Drakkars of the French Elite League).

Grosenick and Jooris signed after their junior seasons; the other four graduated this spring.

The Cyclones are an affiliate of the National Hockey League's Florida Panthers and Nashville Predators.

UPDATED: Jooris forgoes senior year, signs with Calgary

The Dutchmen suffered a major loss on Tuesday.

Star forward Josh Jooris gave up his senior year of eligibility to sign with the Calgary Flames, just weeks after impressing in their development camp.

Jooris inked a two-year, two-way entry-level deal that is worth $832,500 per year in the NHL and $70,000 in the AHL, with a signing bonus of $92,500 each season. The average annual value is $925,000.

"Josh is a right shot center with size and skill,” Flames general manager Jay Feaster said in a release. “During our recent development camp he played an aggressive, up-tempo style and displayed good grit and a high compete level. Our staff felt strongly that we should attempt to get him signed, and we are pleased to welcome him to the organization."

The decision to leave Union a year early wasn't an easy one for Jooris, who is expected to compete in Flames main camp later this year.

"My time at Union has truly been the best of my life,” Jooris said in a release. “The people involved with my three years at school is what made this decision extremely difficult. I fully intend on completing my degree in the near future. Union has always upheld the importance of being a student first and an athlete second, and I truly value my education."

Union head coach Rick Bennett said Jooris called him on Monday night to break the news. The deal had already been done.

"He's living his dream now," Bennett said when reached by phone on Tuesday. "You wish him all the best. He was a great guy for us, a great person, and we always appreciated his time with us."

Jooris, 23, made the most of that time. He piled up 88 points (29 goals, 59 assists) in 117 games over three seasons with the Dutchmen, and finished fourth on the team this past year with 28 points (12 goals, 16 assists). He was Union’s active career leader in playoff scoring with 16 points (seven goals, nine assists), including a pair of goals in Union's 5-1 win over Boston College in the NCAA East Regional semifinal on March 30.

Losing a key offensive player so late in the summer wasn't the best timing for the program, which had already lost its top two scorers, Wayne Simpson and Kyle Bodie, to graduation.

"The timing absolutely stinks," Bennett said. "I wish I could sugarcoat it, but it stinks. It's awful tough to replace a player at this time, never mind one of your best players."

Jooris is the fourth Union player to leave early to go pro in the past three years, but the other three signed contracts within weeks of the season ending. Goaltender Keith Kinkaid signed with New Jersey following the 2010-2011 season, forward Jeremy Welsh signed with Carolina after the 2011-2012 season, and netminder Troy Grosenick agreed to terms with San Jose in April.

Kinkaid and Welsh have already had cups of coffee in the NHL. Bennett thinks Jooris could see that level as well.

"My thoughts are that he's probably going to be in the American Hockey League this year and he may get a call-up to the National Hockey League," Bennett said. "I hope he does, I really do. It would be great for him and his family."

Corbin not returning to Dutchwomen

Camille Corbin is no longer on the Union women's hockey team.

"She is not returning for the 2013-14 season," said Union assistant sports information director Jeff Weinstein.

A reason for the forward's departure was not made available.

Corbin, who would have been a junior on this year's team, came to the program with great promise after piling up 107 points (53 goals) in 54 games during her senior season at Gilmour Academy in Gates Mills, Ohio.

However, that kind of offensive punch was lacking in her two seasons with the Dutchwomen as the San Diego native scored just six points (three goals) in 44 contests.

Corbin's jersey number (#9) has been re-assigned to incoming freshman Alli Devins.

Union represented on ECAC Hockey All-Academic teams

Union was well-represented on the 2012-2013 ECAC Hockey men's and women's All-Academic teams, released by the league on Wednesday.

The men's hockey team had 20 honorees, a program high, while the women's hockey team had 13 make the grade. Players are eligible for the All-Academic team if they earn a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.00 on a 4.00 scale or have a GPA over 3.00 over the past three semesters.

The Dutchmen honorees are Kyle Bodie, Mat Bodie, Daniel Carr, Daniel Ciampini, Greg Coburn, Nick Cruice, Theo DiPauli, Ryan Forgaard, Sabastien Gingras, Troy Grosenick, Matt Hatch, Cole Ikkala, Josh Jooris, Max Novak, Dillon Pieri, David Roy, Shawn Stuart, Wayne Simpson, Charlie Vasaturo and Kevin Sullivan.

The Dutchwomen honorees are Rebecca Babiak, Nicole Bartlett, Elsa Bruestle, Ashley Johnston, Jessica Kaminsky, Rhianna Kurio, Shenae Lundberg, Alana Marcinko, Kelly McGrath, Maddy Norton, Elizabeth Otten, Jeannie Sabourin and Christine Valente.

Tyson Fulton leaves Union

Sophomore forward Tyson Fulton has left Union College and will play hockey next season at Division III St. John's (MN).

"The decision was mutual and we wish all the best to Tyson," said Union head coach Rick Bennett.

It was a bittersweet decision for Fulton.

"It's sad to say goodbye to such a great place," Fulton tweeted. "The memories and friendships I made I will never forget. [I] couldn't ask for a better group of guys."

Fulton played in three games as a freshman, but was injured early this past season and never saw game action. The 21-year-old didn't register a point in his time at Union.

“I just kind of had a tough time [at Union],” Fulton recently told the St. Cloud Times. “Things didn’t go the way I wanted them to and I was feeling a little homesick. I‘m a big believer in God. I think things happen for a reason... I’m very excited about the chance I have at St. John's. I think it’s a place I can have a very successful career — both in hockey and academically.”

Fulton told the St. Cloud Times that his decision to play at St. John's was aided by the presence of long-time friend and current St. John's defenseman Dave Mylrea.

“We grew up together and we’re from the same hometown,” Fulton told the St. Cloud Times. “We’ve been best friends since we were little. So he was a big reason why I looked at St. John‘s.”

Pontarelli staying in Cornwall

Prized 2014 men's hockey recruit Michael Pontarelli announced on Sunday that he will play a second season with Cornwall of the Central Canada Hockey League.

"I've decided to play in Cornwall for one more year," Pontarelli tweeted. "Time to start getting ready for our season as defending champs."

Speculation had been running rampant about where the budding star would play in the fall. After blitzing through the league -- the 19-year-old forward lead the CCHL in scoring with 52 goals and 55 assists -- some believed there was little point to returning for a second season.

One of those individuals was Hawkesbury (CCHL) head coach Shawn Anderson, who once coached Pontarelli. Anderson recently told the Cornwall Standard-Freeholder that he didn't think Pontarelli had much to gain by playing a second season in the CCHL.

Muskegon of the Untied States Hockey League appeared to be one possible alternative. The Lumberjacks traded up to select Pontarelli with the 53rd overall pick in last month's USHL draft. He competed in Muskegon camp over the weekend and scored one goal.

Other speculation had Pontarelli coming to Union a year ahead of schedule. The Dutchmen graduated its top two forwards, Wayne Simpson (36 points) and Kyle Bodie (33 points).

Pontarelli was recently named the unanimous choice for CCHL MVP and the CCHL Sportsmanship and Ability Award. He was also selected as the first-ever Canadian Junior Hockey League MVP and CJHL Top Forward.

Beal departs for Sacred Heart

Men's hockey volunteer assistant coach Joel Beal has been named an assistant coach at Sacred Heart.

Beal would have begun his third season as a volunteer assistant at Union this fall. He previously played for the Dutchmen from 2001-2005 and accumulated 101 career points.

Sacred Heart finished in last place in Atlantic Hockey this past season. The Pioneers went 2-21-4 in league play and 2-30-4 overall.

Forgaard, Stuart headed to France

Senior defensemen Ryan Forgaard and Shawn Stuart signed contracts with Drakkars of the French Elite League on Monday.

Forgaard collected nine points (all assists) in 110 games played for the Dutchmen. Stuart recorded 26 points (four goals, 22 assists) in 147 games played.

They will be joined in Europe by Greg Coburn. The senior defenseman signed with Ilves of the Finnish Elite League last Monday.

Dutchwomen release 2013-2014 schedule

The Dutchwomen released their 2013-2014 schedule on Friday.

The 34 game schedule includes contests against eight non-league opponents and the other 11 members of ECAC Hockey.

Union will get underway when the Ottawa Junior Senators come to Messa Rink for an exhibition on Sep. 21. That is the earliest the Dutchwomen have played in at least ten seasons.

The regular season opens a week later with a trip to Connecticut. The Huskies opened last season at Messa Rink and lost, 3-2.

“We beat them last year but it was a close, hard-fought game,” Dutchwomen head coach Claudia Barcomb said. “I think it will be another close game this year. It will be nice to get our kids on the road early on in the season to get an idea of what we’re all about.”

The regular season home opener is Oct. 4 when Providence comes to Messa Rink for the first of two games. 

Union will be home again the following weekend for single games against Northeastern and Boston University. Both games start at 3:30 as the Dutchmen will have home games against Bowling Green each night.

“BU was in the finals of the national championship game last year, and they’ll be really good again this year,” Barcomb said.

Non-conference action continues through October with trips to Penn State (Oct. 18-19) and to Syracuse on Oct. 26.

League play begins when Dartmouth and Harvard come to Schenectady on Nov. 1-2. Those will be the first of eight straight league games for the Dutchwomen.

“I think we’ll play a good variety of teams before we start league play,” Barcomb said. “With eight games in a row to start league play, it will be a very important stretch for us in the overall picture of our league.”

Other league games in that stretch include dates at Colgate (Nov. 8), at Cornell (Nov. 9), vs Brown (Nov. 15), vs Yale (Nov. 16), at Quinnipiac (Dec. 6), and at Princeton (Dec. 7).

The Dutchwomen will close out 2013 and start 2014 in non-league action. Maine comes to Messa Rink on Dec. 14-15 and RIT pays a visit on Jan. 3-4.

“We play RIT for the first time since I’ve been here and they’re a competitive team in their second year at the Division I level,” Barcomb said. “Scott (McDonald) has put together a pretty good team and it will be a good matchup for us.”

After the two game set against RIT, it's nothing but league play as the final 14 games are against league opponents. Princeton and Quinnipiac make visits to Messa Rink on Jan. 11-12 while the home-and-home against Capital Region rival RPI is Jan. 17-18.

Barcomb, a Harvard graduate, will return to her roots when the Dutchwomen travel to Harvard on Jan. 24, a day before a trip to Dartmouth. The North Country teams, Clarkson and St. Lawrence, travel to Schenectady on Jan. 31-Feb. 1.

Union will hit the road and travel to Brown and Yale on Feb. 7-8. Cornell, this past year's ECAC regular season and tournament champion, comes to Messa Rink on Feb. 14 and Colgate follows suit the next day. 

The regular season ends with a trip to the North Country with dates at St. Lawrence on Feb. 21 and Clarkson on Feb. 22.

“I like the way our schedule is, it’s pretty balanced the whole way through,” Barcomb said. “Our focus has to be to not have any let ups. We’ve told our players to be consistent in their workouts this spring, and hopefully that will continue into the fall.”

Grosenick earns honor

Junior goaltender Troy Grosenick was selected to the Capital One Academic All-American third team by the College Sports Information Directors of America on Thursday.

Grosenick, who also earned All-American third team honors last season, joins Stephane Boileau '11 as the only Union men's hockey players to earn  Academic All-American recognition.

Grosenick ended this past season with a 17-10-5 record, a 2.12 goals against average, and a .926 save percentage in 34 contests. He is Union’s career leader in goals against average (1.89) and save percentage (.930).

The Brookfield, Wisconsin native gave up his final year of collegiate eligibility when he signed with the San Jose Sharks in April. He will remain at Union through the summer to finish his managerial economics degree.

Dutchmen release 2013-2014 schedule

Men's hockey 2013-2014 schedule

Union released its 2013-2014 men's hockey schedule on Friday.

The release isn't particularly big news for readers here, as the bulk of the schedule had already been pieced together throughout the past several weeks. The lone revelations were the dates of the two long-rumored games at Penn State. Union will play there on Nov. 30-Dec. 1.

The schedule features 34 games against six non-league opponents and the 11 other members of ECAC Hockey. Two-time defending Whitelaw Cup champion Union will host 15 home contests, up one from the past two seasons, and will take on at least one team from every conference.

The Dutchmen will play six games against participants in this past season's Frozen Four with two against Quinnipiac, two against Yale, and two against St. Cloud State.

Some schedule highlights:

Union will have four home games in October, opening the season with two against Bowling Green on Oct. 11-12 and two against Lake Superior State on Oct. 18-19. The last time the Dutchmen had four home games in October was the 2010-2011 season.

“I know it’s been talked about in years past that we’ve started with a lot of games on the road, but this year we’re playing at home for the first four games against two excellent opponents,” Union head coach Rick Bennett said. “It’s a nice way for us to start the season.”

League play gets underway in November. Union will travel to Dartmouth and Harvard on Nov. 1-2 before hosting Colgate and Cornell the following weekend. The home-and-home with RPI is a week after that.

“I think our league has been an absolute war in the past few seasons and I don’t see that changing at all,” Bennett said. “I think that we will have a big target on our back similar to what this past year’s team had with a lot of expectations.”

One particularly tough stretch occurs in December. After a rare Wednesday night game vs Dartmouth on Dec. 11, the Dutchmen will board a plane and travel to St. Cloud State for two games on Dec. 13-14. The 1,000-plus mile trip to St. Cloud State is the farthest trip Union will make during the regular season.

“We have a tough grind in December with three games within four days,” Bennett said. It’s similar to what happened to us in the NCAA Tournament in the fact of facing a little adversity in scheduling. I think we have that here, playing Dartmouth at home and then jumping on the plane the next day and heading out to St. Cloud State for two games against a Frozen Four opponent.”

As grueling as that trip may be, the Dutchmen will have plenty of time to rest. They will be off for four weeks prior to resuming play on Jan. 10 at Quinnipiac, the defending ECAC regular season champions.

The rest of the schedule will be almost exclusively league play. The lone exceptions are two unusually late out of conference games at New Hampshire on Jan. 17-18 and the non-league Mayor's Cup against RPI at the Times Union Center on Jan. 25.

Six of the seven games in January are away from Messa Rink with the lone home contest being Harvard on Jan. 24.

February and March will see more balance in the schedule with four home games and five road games. The Dutchmen close out the regular season on Mar. 1 at Brown.

Dutchwomen to travel to PSU

The 2013-2014 Dutchwomen schedule continues to come together.

Penn State released its women's hockey schedule on Tuesday and Union will play two games there, Oct. 18-19. The Nittany Lions are set to open the state of the art Pegula Ice Arena in time for the upcoming season.

Union hosted Penn State for two games this past January and won both. A 1-0 win on Jan. 11 was followed by a 2-1 triumph the next day.

Other known Dutchwomen dates include two home games vs Providence (Oct. 4-5) and a trip to Syracuse (Oct. 26).

5/30 update: The Dutchwomen will travel to Cornell on Nov. 9 and host the Big Red on Feb. 14.

Dutchwomen to host Providence, travel to 'Cuse

Providence released its 2013-2014 women's hockey schedule on Friday and a trip to Messa Rink is on the docket.

Union will host the Friars for two games, Oct. 4-5. The Dutchwomen are winless in three previous games against Providence with the most recent meeting being a 4-0 setback at Providence on Nov. 25, 2012.

In other Dutchwomen schedule rumblings, they will play one game at Syracuse on Oct. 26. The Dutchwomen and the Orange split a two game series at Messa Rink last November, but the Orange hold the lifetime series lead, 6-2-0.

Report: Dutchmen to travel to UConn

Goalmouth Radio reports the University of Connecticut is expected to host the Dutchmen for one game on Friday, Oct. 25.

The report warns the game isn't set in stone, but what is listed is expected to become the final UConn schedule. Goalmouth Radio is run by UConn hockey broadcaster Will Moran.

Union has played UConn on ten previous occasions, holding a 7-0-3 mark. The most recent meeting was Oct. 27 2012 at UConn, a 2-2 tie.
