Dutchwomen set records in win

Box Score

by Ryan Fay

Friday night was one for the record books for the Union women's hockey team.

The Dutchwomen set program highs in wins in a season (eight) and league wins in a season (three) thanks to their first-ever win over Princeton, a 2-1 decision at Messa Rink.

The eight wins surpassed the seven wins the Dutchwomen picked up last season. The three league wins broke the previous record of two, set in 2011-2012.

After a scoreless first period, Stefanie Thomson opened the scoring with a power play tally at 2:26 of the second. She rifled a one-timer from the slot off a feed from Christine Valente to give the Dutchwomen a 1-0 lead.

Just under two minutes later, Kathryn Tomaselli scored on a breakaway to extend Union's cushion to 2-0. The goal was her tenth of the season, making her the first Union women's hockey player with double-digit goals in a season since 2006-2007, when Elise Nichols tallied 12 and Suzy Pocock recorded ten.

Princeton got on the board at 15:06 of the third when Cassidy Tucker foiled Union goaltender Shenae Lundberg's shutout bid with a backhander that sliced Union's lead in half.

Brianna Lehay nearly tied the game with the extra attacker late in the third, but her shot hit the pipe, one of three Princeton shots to hit the pipe on the night.

Lundberg finished with 28 saves while improving to 8-12-0 on the season. The Dutchwomen supported Lundberg with a season-high 27 blocked shots on a night when Princeton blocked just two.

Tigers (9-8-2, 6-6-1 ECAC) netminder Kimberly Newell collected 21 stops in the losing effort.

Union's penalty kill went 2-for-2, marking the sixth time in the last seven games that the Dutchwomen haven't allowed power play goal. The unit is 23-for-26 during that span.

The Dutchwomen (8-12-1, 3-6-0) will look for their ninth win when they host Quinnipiac at 4 p.m. Saturday. The tenth-ranked Bobcats fell at Rensselaer, 3-2, on Friday.
