Carpenito leaves for Northeastern

The Union women's hockey team needs a new assistant coach.

Nick Carpenito, who was hired last summer following the resignation of Julie Chu, has left the program to take an assistant coach position at Northeastern, his alma mater.

He will move into the role formerly held by Jeff Pellegrini, who was elevated to associate head coach after Linda Lundrigan stepped down earlier this offseason to pursue a career in clinical research.

"We would like to welcome Nick back to Huntington Avenue," said Northeastern women's hockey head coach Dave Flint. "We had a lot of great candidates but after the interview process, Nick's passion for coaching was clear, and the only thing that exceeded it was his passion for Northeastern."

At Union, he was involved with the development and execution of practices, recruiting, scouting, film study and travel coordination. He also helped with the development of the special teams' units, including the power play, which ranked seventh in the country (18.5%) last season.

Prior to coming to Union, he spent two seasons at Division III Elmira, where he served as assistant coach on the women's hockey team and head coach on the junior varsity team. The Soaring Eagles captured the 2013 Division III national championship.

Carpenito played for the Northeastern men’s hockey club team from 2008 to 2011 and simultaneously coached the women’s club hockey team, which won the ACHA Division II National Championship in 2010.

In addition to team accolades, the Acton, Massachusetts native was the recipient of the 2011 ACHA Women’s Division I National Coach of the Year Award and the 2009 ACHA Women’s Division II National Coach of the Year Award.

The search for Carpenito's replacement began last week.
