Dutchmen announce 2014-2015 schedule

by Ryan Fay

NCAA Hockey-champion Union announced its 2014-2015 schedule on Monday.

The 34-game schedule includes games against nine out-of-conference opponents and the other 11 members of ECAC Hockey.

After a home exhibition game against the University of Prince Edward Island on Oct. 5, Union opens the regular season at home against American International on Oct. 10. That's when Union will raise banners for the national championship, the ECACH regular season championship and the ECACH postseason title.

New Hampshire makes its first trip to Messa Rink since the 1995-1996 season on Oct. 11. Union played two games at New Hampshire in January and won both.

The Dutchmen make their first road trip of the season when they travel to Maine for two games on Oct. 17-18.

Union returns home the following weekend to take on St. Cloud State on Oct. 24-25. The Dutchmen picked up a win and a tie at St. Cloud State last December, when the Huskies were the top-ranked team in the country.

Union's bid to repeat as ECACH regular season champions begins on Oct. 31 with a visit to RPI. The two teams square off again the following day at Messa Rink. ECACH play continues with home games against Dartmouth (Nov. 7), Harvard (Nov. 8), Quinnipiac (Nov. 14) and Princeton (Nov. 15).

After a two-week break, the Dutchmen start a string of nine straight road games when they travel to Notre Dame for the Shillelagh Tournament on Nov. 28-29. Union faces Notre Dame on Nov. 28 then either Ohio State or Western Michigan on Nov. 29. Union last played in the tournament during the 2008-2009 season.

The Dutchmen open December with ECACH contests at Brown (Dec. 5) and at Yale (Dec. 6). Following a three-week break, the team resumes play at the inaugural Frozen Holiday Classic at Bridgeport's Webster Bank Arena on Dec. 28-29. The Dutchmen take on Connecticut on Dec. 28 before battling either Sacred Heart or UMass-Lowell on Dec. 29.

Union starts the 2015 calendar year with a trek to Boston University on Jan. 3. The game will mark the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

Union remains on the road the following weekend to take on Princeton (Jan. 9) and Quinnipiac (Jan. 10) before returning home to battle Cornell (Jan. 16) and Colgate (Jan. 17).

The third-annual non-conference Mayor's Cup against RPI is slated for Jan. 24 at the Times Union Center in Albany.

The Dutchmen close January with a road trip to Harvard (Jan. 30) and Darmouth (Jan. 31) before starting February with a visit to the North Country to take on Clarkson (Feb. 6) and St. Lawrence (Feb. 7).

After home games against Yale (Feb. 13) and Brown (Feb. 14), Union treks to Central New York to battle Colgate (Feb. 20) and Cornell (Feb. 21).

The regular season ends with home dates versus St. Lawrence (Feb. 27) and Clarkson (Feb. 28). The Clarkson game will mark Union's annual senior night celebrations.
