Former Union defenseman Brock Matheson has retired from professional hockey after four seasons.

"I decided that I would accept a bachelor of education offer at a university in my hometown," said Matheson, a native of Gananoque, Ontario. "It was a great ride for me but for a number of factors I felt that this was the best decision going forward."

The 27-year-old spent last season in the Netherlands playing for the Friesland Flyers, where he recorded three goals and 16 assists in 36 games. Before that, Matheson spent a season in Ireland playing under former Union player Doug Christiansen on the Belfast Giants. Matheson last played stateside in 2011-12 with the ECHL's Stockton Thunder.

Along the way, he had cups of coffee in the American Hockey League with the Binghamton Senators (2010-11) and the Rochester Americans (2011-12). He picked up his first and only AHL point when he notched an assist during a three-game stint with the Americans.

Matheson played for Union from 2007-2011, collecting nine goals and 15 assists in 141 career games. He served as co-captain with Mike Wakita in 2009-10 and captain in 2010-11.
