Ex-Union star Simpson loaned to Providence

The ECHL's South Carolina Stingrays loaned former Union forward Wayne Simpson to the American Hockey League's Providence Bruins on Thursday.

Simpson, the Stingrays' top scorer, could make his AHL debut as early as Friday when the Bruins host the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

The 25-year-old has nine goals and 15 assists in 32 games this season. He's been especially productive lately with two goals and nine assists over his last seven contests.

Simpson joins six other Union hockey alums on AHL rosters, defenseman Mat Bodie (Hartford), forward Daniel Carr (Hamilton), defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere (Lehigh Valley), forward Kelly Zajac (Albany), forward Jeremy Welsh (Chicago) and goalie Troy Grosenick (Worcester).

Simpson played for Union from 2009-2013, compiling 56 goals and 59 assists in 159 career games.
