The contest was the first NHL meeting between the two players, and it was played at Philadelphia's Wells Fargo Center, the arena where they helped the Dutchmen win the NCAA title in 2014.

On Tuesday, Carr struck first, assisting on Alex Galchenyuk's goal at 14:14 of the opening period that tied the score 1-1.

Gostisbehere, who was named the game's first star, responded at 3:20 of the second. The defenseman scored his seventh goal of the season on a blast from the point that put the Flyers up 2-1.

Just under five minutes later, he assisted on Wayne Simmonds' power play goal that gave the Flyers a 3-1 lead. In the process, Gostisbehere notched his third multi-point effort in 22 games this season.

Carr made things interesting with 55 seconds left in the third, getting the Canadiens within 4-3 with his fifth tally of the season. The goal gave the winger his first career multi-point game in the NHL.

The Flyers and Canadiens meet two more times in the regular season, Feb. 2 at Philadelphia and Feb. 19 in Montreal.
