Ex-Union goalie Koenig signs in UK

by Ryan Fay

Former Union goaltender Trevor Koenig will continue his professional hockey career in the United Kingdom.

Koenig
The 41-year-old signed with the Elite Ice Hockey League's Dundee Stars for the remainder of the season on Wednesday. He's expected to make his debut with the Scotland-based team on Saturday at the Braehead Clan.

Koenig hasn't played since finishing last season with the Herlev Eagles, a professional team in Denmark. The 18-year pro had a 3.01 goals-against average and a .900 save percentage in 21 games with the Eagles a year ago.

Koenig previously played in the EIHL with the Newcastle Vipers and the Coventry Blaze from 2005-2008. He backstopped the Blaze to back-to-back EIHL championships in 2007 and 2008.

The Stars were looking to add a goalie after primary netminder Vlastimil Lakosil returned to the Czech Republic for personal reasons.

"We had a choice of goalies to bring in," Stars head coach Marc LeFebvre said in a release. "When Trevor's name came up, we considered him the ideal replacement. Trevor will bring a presence and Elite League experience to the locker room. He knows the league and we expect him to quickly adapt to life at the Dundee Ice Arena."

Koenig tended goal for Union from 1994-1998. He remains third on the program's Division I era career saves list (2,538) and fourth in career save percentage (.913).
