Union blows lead, falls to Brown in OT

BOX SCORE

by Ryan Fay

Union was less than two minutes away from picking up an ECAC Hockey win over Brown Friday at Messa Rink.

Brown celebrates after Max Willman's game-winner
at 4:32 of overtime.
But the Bears had other ideas.

With his team trailing 2-1, Brown's Nick Lappin tied the score at 18:28 of the third. Then at 4:32 of overtime, Max Willman potted the game-winner to give the Bears a 3-2 victory.

The game marked the fifth time in 11 contests that the Dutchmen blew a third period lead. They're 1-1-3 in those games.

"We've kind of been rolling like this for a bit now. It's frustrating," Union head coach Rick Bennett said. "When you realize this is a 60-minute game, and you've got to come to the rink to play 60 minutes, maybe 65, that's the way it goes."

The Dutchmen were in control until Lappin's tally. But things went awry when defenseman Connor Light turned the puck over behind Union's net in what appeared to be a miscommunication with goaltender Alex Sakellaropoulos. The puck was picked up by Lappin, who skated in and sent the puck into a wide open net.

"I don't know if the goalie tried to reverse (the puck) or the defender tried to reverse it," Lappin said. "It just popped out to me, and I was able to pull it to my backhand and pretty much had an open net."

Lappin's goal gave the Bears (1-2 ECACH, 1-3 overall) a bounce in their step. They outshot Union 5-1 in overtime after getting outshot 31-21 in regulation. Willman notched the game-winner after coming in from the left wing. His initial shot was stopped, but he was left uncontested and put in his own rebound.

It couldn't have come at better time for the Bears, who had been winless in three games this season.

"It's a big two points for us," Brown head coach Brendan Whittett said.

It was a bitter turn of events for a Union (1-4, 3-5-3) team looking to build off a 4-1 win at then 17th-ranked Clarkson last Saturday.

“It definitely hurts,” Dutchmen co-captain Mike Vecchione said. “That’s [what happens] when you don’t play consistent. We were on and off, dominating most of the game. But too many costly mistakes. It’s going to happen with a team like that.”

Union's power play, which was 5-for-46 coming into the game, scored twice in similar fashion during a five minute major against Zack Pryzbek, who was tossed for a contact to the head penalty against Theo DiPauli at 3:06 of the second.

Michael Pontarelli tipped-in Sebastien Gingras' shot from the high slot at 5:44 to give Union a 1-0 lead, and Ryan Scarfo doubled the advantage after he deflected in Nick DeSimone's bid from the same spot a little more than two minutes later.

Brown cut the lead in half late in the second with a power play goal of its own. Brandon Pfeil's shot from the top of the right circle banged off the post and went in at 17:52.

Union held a 30-10 shots on goal edge through two frames.

"I didn't think it was a great first two periods by any stretch. I thought Union had the majority of the chances, and they were winning a lot of races and battles," Whittet said. "I thought we responded well in the third."
